Confirm the route before you plan.
Planned portfolio only. Avenor’s approved scope for ST1386, the applicable version, assessor capacity, fees and service dates must be confirmed before booking. Official approval of the standard is not approval of Avenor.
Checked 20 October 2026: version 1.0 is approved for delivery and available for starts through 17 December 2026. A revised assessment plan is approved for new starts from 18 December 2026. Existing apprentices remain on their applicable registered version.

For apprentices who build and operate the pipelines that make organisational data usable. Data engineers gather requirements, connect sources, transform and validate data, implement repeatable flows and monitor data products so analysts, scientists and operational teams can rely on them. Provider preparation should connect architecture and code to service outcomes: why a source was selected, how quality and lineage are controlled, what happens when a pipeline fails and how sensitive information is protected. A strong evidence story makes the apprentice’s design and operational decisions visible without exporting live datasets, credentials or proprietary infrastructure detail.
Training providers supporting data engineers who build pipelines, integrations, data platforms and governed data products across public and private organisations.
- Translate business and analytical needs into a controlled, supportable data engineering solution.
- Build and test repeatable data flows with clear lineage, quality controls and failure handling.
- Explain architecture, security, performance and operational trade-offs to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Prepare for a fair assessment
Use the applicable plan as your starting point. The following are preparation prompts, rather than additional gateway requirements or a substitute for the assessment specification.
- Keep one end-to-end, sanitised pipeline narrative: requirement, source assessment, design, transformations, tests, deployment, monitoring and response to a failed or late feed. Show the apprentice’s decisions separately from platform defaults and team contributions.
- Agree evidence boundaries with the employer before selecting a project. Replace credentials, personal data, schema details and exploitable infrastructure information with controlled extracts, synthetic records or diagrams that preserve the reasoning without exposing the environment.
- Confirm version 1.0 for the registered apprentice before using the current method summary. The replacement plan applies to new starts from 18 December 2026; do not move earlier apprentices to it or describe the future plan as the current method set.
Plan a useful handover.
Buy this route around the provider’s real data-engineering environments, not a list of cloud products. Give prospective organisations cohort volumes, version, likely project types, employer security constraints and the degree of individual ownership apprentices can demonstrate. Ask how the project scope is checked, how operational contribution is authenticated and how assessors remain current across different platforms. Assign a curriculum owner for version alignment, an employer data owner for disclosure and a coordinator for project suitability before learners depend on inaccessible production evidence.
A realistic evidence conversation
Illustrative, not a prescribed requirement: an apprentice replaces a fragile manual feed with a monitored pipeline. Their record links user need, source profiling, architecture options, transformation and quality tests, secure configuration, deployment, alerts, recovery and measured service effect. A failure example shows how late data was contained and communicated. The employer approves a sanitised diagram and synthetic sample while the apprentice explains personal design and implementation decisions. Use this scenario to test secure transfer, project sign-off and what happens if the employer withdraws the planned project.
Handover checks
- Provider lead confirms version 1.0, project opportunity and the apprentice’s sustained engineering duties.
- Employer data and platform owners approve sanitisation, access boundaries and contribution evidence.
- Assessment coordinator records project-scope approval, submission ownership and transition treatment.
Questions to ask before buying
- How do you assess engineering judgement across different data platforms without prescribing one stack?
- What evidence route works when schemas, code, logs or datasets cannot leave the employer?
- How will you separate version 1.0 cohorts from the revised plan starting 18 December 2026?

Map pipeline evidence
Link sanitised design, test and operational records to requirements while exposing gaps and ownership.
Check project readiness
Review version, employer approval and evidence availability without treating self-reported completion as acceptance.
Practise engineering decisions
Rehearse clear explanations of architecture, failure handling and trade-offs using original prompts.
Think it through.
Explain your decisions.
These are original learning prompts. They are not live assessment questions, an official mock paper or a prediction of your result.
1. A nightly pipeline completes successfully but downstream totals drift from the source. How would you investigate?
Explore a response structure
Start with agreed definitions and control totals, then trace extraction windows, late records, transformation rules, joins and deduplication. Explain how lineage and reproducible checks narrow the cause, how you would contain unreliable outputs and who needs a clear service update.
2. When would you reject a faster data architecture?
Explore a response structure
Compare performance with reliability, maintainability, cost, security, recovery and the skills of the operating team. Use the actual service requirement and failure impact. Explain what evidence would justify revisiting the decision rather than presenting speed as the only measure.
3. How would you prove that a new data product is ready for users?
Explore a response structure
Define acceptance measures for completeness, accuracy, timeliness, access and recovery. Describe representative tests, monitoring and a controlled release. Include the limitations users must understand and the owner who decides whether remaining risk is acceptable.
Questions about this standard
How is Data Engineer different from Data Analyst?
Data engineering focuses on building and operating dependable data flows and platforms; data analysis focuses on interpreting data to answer questions. Real roles can overlap, so select the standard from the apprentice’s sustained duties and published requirements rather than their job title or software.
Which assessment methods apply to version 1.0?
The official version 1.0 plan specifies a project evaluation report with presentation and questions, plus a professional discussion. The project is completed before gateway and the evaluation report is produced after gateway. Detailed conditions remain in the plan and must be checked for the registered apprentice.
Can a provider book this standard with Avenor now?
This is planned-portfolio guidance. Avenor’s approved scope, the applicable version, assessor capacity, fees and dates must be confirmed before any booking. Skills England approval of ST1386 does not establish Avenor approval to deliver it.
