Confirm the route before you plan.
Planned portfolio only. Avenor’s approved scope, applicable standard version, assessor capacity, fees and service dates must be confirmed before booking. The standard’s Skills England approval is not approval of Avenor.
Checked 19 October 2026: version 1.1 remains approved for delivery while revision work continues. A published temporary dispensation applies only to agreed redundant apprentices; it must not be assumed to apply to other learners.

For apprentices who turn an organisational question into a defensible analysis. Data analysts investigate requirements, prepare information, apply analytical methods and communicate findings that inform decisions. The focus is the connection between reliable data and useful business insight, rather than the appearance of a dashboard alone. Providers should help apprentices explain their own reasoning, the limitations of their analysis and the effect of their recommendations. This route is relevant across sectors, from service performance and workforce analysis to customer behaviour and operational reporting.
Training providers supporting analysts in finance, operations, marketing, public services and other teams where decisions depend on data.
- Frame an analytical problem around a specific stakeholder decision and measurable question.
- Explain how source quality, transformations and analytical assumptions affect the conclusions.
- Present evidence in a way a non-technical decision-maker can interpret and challenge.
Prepare for a fair assessment
Use the applicable plan as your starting point. The following are preparation prompts, rather than additional gateway requirements or a substitute for the assessment specification.
- Keep a traceable record of a real analysis: business question, source selection, preparation decisions, method, findings and limitations. Remove identifiers and commercially sensitive data before sharing any example.
- Practise discussing why an analytical approach was appropriate and what a different approach might have revealed. Keep the apprentice’s contribution distinct from the work of colleagues.
- Review the relevant version and assessment plan before fixing a project or evidence schedule. A polished dashboard is useful context, but it should not conceal missing reasoning or weak data controls.
Plan a useful handover.
Buy this route around the provider's actual analytical curriculum and employer settings, rather than a preferred software stack. Map the cohort's typical decisions, data access and project opportunities before comparing organisations. Ask how the service handles evidence containing personal or commercially sensitive information, how it distinguishes an apprentice's analysis from team-produced dashboards, and how version changes are communicated. A procurement decision should also name the provider owner for scope confirmation, employer readiness and data-release approval.
A realistic evidence conversation
Illustrative, not a prescribed requirement: an apprentice receives conflicting service-volume figures from two systems. Their evidence trail records the business question, definitions, extraction dates, reconciliation rules, quality checks, chosen analysis, uncertainty and the decision made from it. A manager confirms the apprentice's contribution, while identifiers and confidential values are removed. This gives a prospective assessment partner a realistic case for explaining secure transfer, authenticity checks and how analytical reasoning will be explored without asking for live assessment content.
Handover checks
- Provider curriculum lead confirms the registered version, cohort profile and suitable project opportunities.
- Employer data owner approves the sanitisation method and secure evidence-transfer route.
- Apprentice-facing owner checks that analysis, assumptions, limitations and personal contribution remain traceable.
Questions to ask before buying
- How will you review analytical evidence without requiring unnecessary raw employer data?
- How do you test an apprentice's reasoning when dashboards or code were produced collaboratively?
- What happens when the cohort version changes or a planned project no longer provides suitable evidence?
Think it through.
Explain your decisions.
These are original learning prompts. They are not live assessment questions, an official mock paper or a prediction of your result.
1. A dashboard shows a 20% improvement in retention. What would you check before presenting that as success?
Explore a response structure
Explore the baseline period, cohort definitions, missing records and changes in business conditions. Explain the difference between an observed association and a supported causal claim. Describe one further check that could change the interpretation.
2. Two systems report different customer totals. How would you investigate?
Explore a response structure
Start with the definitions, extraction dates, identifiers and inclusion rules. Consider duplicates, joins, inactive accounts and missing values. Explain how you would document reconciliation decisions so a colleague could reproduce the result.
3. How would you present uncertainty to a busy operations director?
Explore a response structure
Choose a practical decision and explain the range of plausible outcomes, the material limitations and the risk of acting too early. Use plain language and a suitable visual. Avoid presenting an uncertain estimate as an exact forecast.
Questions about this standard
Is this the same as Data Technician Level 3?
No. A technician focuses on preparing and presenting usable data, while this route places more emphasis on analysis and insight. Select the standard through the actual job role and its published requirements, rather than the software used.
Which assessment methods apply?
Use the published assessment plan for the apprentice’s registered version and option. Methods, timings, gateway documents and grading rules can differ between versions. These original practice prompts are learning resources, not live assessment questions or a prediction of an assessment outcome.
Can we book with Avenor?
