What this occupation demonstrates

Advanced digital forensic professionals lead and innovate in the capture, processing, analysis and interpretation of complex digital evidence. The occupation adds research, validation, technical leadership and expert judgement to forensic practice. Skills England identifies the current route as a degree apprenticeship, so procurement must join higher-education delivery, employer authority and occupational assessment rather than treating it as a standalone EPA booking. Confidentiality, lawful authority, scientific validity and unbiased interpretation must govern every evidence decision.

Higher education providers and authorised forensic employers exploring a Level 7 degree-apprenticeship partnership for advanced practitioners.

  • Design and justify valid forensic approaches for complex or novel evidence problems.
  • Interpret findings with scientific caution, documented limitations and appropriate peer challenge.
  • Lead research, quality and practitioner decisions within lawful and ethical boundaries.

Prepare for a fair assessment

Use the applicable plan as your starting point. The following are preparation prompts, rather than additional gateway requirements or a substitute for the assessment specification.

  1. Agree the higher-education, degree-awarding, employer and occupational-assessment responsibilities before proposing a cohort. Map dissertation governance, ethics and supervision separately from operational case authority.
  2. Use authorised or synthetic research datasets for rehearsal. Never place live exhibits, identifiable case records, illegal content, credentials or sensitive operational techniques in public tools.
  3. Confirm version 1.1 for starts through 26 September 2027. The revised assessment plan scheduled from 27 September 2027 requires its own partnership and method review.
Provider buying guide

Plan a useful handover.

Treat this as a high-consequence degree partnership. Document the HEP, degree award, student registration, research ethics, dissertation supervision, occupational assessment, independent judgement, appeals and continuity. The employer must separately govern case authority, laboratory controls and disclosure. Ask every proposed partner how expert assessors remain current, manage conflicts and review novel methods without gaining unnecessary access to sensitive cases. Level 7 funding restrictions for starts from 1 January 2026 also require case-specific checking; no eligibility promise should appear in a commercial proposal.

A realistic evidence conversation

Illustrative, not prescribed: an apprentice validates a synthetic method for recovering structured records from a test application. Their dissertation defines the research question, literature, controlled dataset, repeatability, error and bias analysis, peer challenge, limitations and recommendation against operational use until further validation. No real exhibit or exploitable case detail is shared. Use the example to make each partner identify who approves ethics, who judges academic quality and occupational competence, where research data is retained and how an adverse or inconclusive result is handled.

Handover checks

  1. HEP confirms degree award, registration, supervision, ethics and integrated assessment responsibilities.
  2. Employer forensic authority approves research access, security classification, disclosure and case separation.
  3. Partnership owner records independent assessment, conflicts, appeals, retention and exit arrangements.

Questions to ask before buying

  • What verified HEP and degree arrangement supports this version of the degree apprenticeship?
  • How are dissertation ethics, occupational judgement and sensitive evidence custody separated and governed?
  • How will version 1.1 and the September 2027 revised plan be kept distinct?
Original preparation material

Think it through.
Explain your decisions.

These are original learning prompts. They are not live assessment questions, an official mock paper or a prediction of your result.

1. A novel extraction method produces a useful result but has limited validation. How would you proceed?

Explore a response structure

Separate exploratory value from evidential reliability, document validation gaps and error risks, seek independent review and use only within authorised limits. Explain what evidence would be required before operational adoption.

2. How would you protect objectivity when investigative context suggests a likely answer?

Explore a response structure

Use scoped questions, controlled methods, contemporaneous records, alternative hypotheses and review. Explain how contextual information is limited without preventing necessary interpretation.

3. A dissertation needs examples from sensitive cases. What evidence strategy is proportionate?

Explore a response structure

Use approved de-identification, synthetic or aggregated material where possible, obtain ethics and case-owner approval, minimise disclosure and preserve an auditable separation between academic research and case evidence.

Questions about this standard

Is ST1409 a standalone non-degree assessment?

No. The current Skills England record identifies it as a degree apprenticeship with Office for Students external quality assurance. A suitable HEP, degree and integrated assessment arrangement must be confirmed.

Which methods apply to version 1.1?

A dissertation project including presentation with questions, and a professional discussion underpinned by a portfolio. The revised plan scheduled for 27 September 2027 may differ.

Can Avenor accept a cohort now?

This page supports degree-partnership enquiry only. It does not prove the required HE arrangement, approval, forensic security, assessor capability or capacity.
