Confirm the route before you plan.
Planned portfolio only. Avenor’s approved scope, applicable standard version, assessor capacity, fees and service dates must be confirmed before booking. The standard’s Skills England approval is not approval of Avenor.
Checked 19 October 2026: version 1.1 is available for starts through 17 December 2026. A revised standard and assessment plan are scheduled from 18 December 2026. Confirm version and plan before setting assessment or preparation dates.

For apprentices who improve the connection between building software and operating it reliably. DevOps work brings together collaboration, automation, delivery pipelines, infrastructure and feedback from running services. Preparation should show why an automation or release approach made delivery safer or more effective, rather than simply listing tools. Providers can help apprentices explain the relationship between code, environments, tests, monitoring and incident learning. The most useful examples reveal decisions and improvements made with a team, including what happened when a change did not work as expected.
Providers supporting platform, infrastructure, deployment, build and release, and reliability engineering roles.
- Explain how a delivery pipeline manages quality, repeatability and release risk.
- Use operational evidence to investigate problems and improve a service.
- Evaluate when automation is worth its implementation and maintenance cost.
Prepare for a fair assessment
Use the applicable plan as your starting point. The following are preparation prompts, rather than additional gateway requirements or a substitute for the assessment specification.
- Build a sanitised account of a delivery change covering the previous process, the proposed improvement, controls, rollout and observed effect. Separate measured benefits from expected savings.
- Practise discussing a failed release without blame. Ask how the team detected the issue, recovered service, learned from it and changed the system to reduce recurrence.
- Keep secrets and deployment permissions out of shared examples. Use a controlled sandbox for practice pipelines and infrastructure exercises rather than a production account.
Plan a useful handover.
Compare offers against the cohort's real delivery lifecycle: build, test, release, infrastructure and service feedback need to form a connected story. Tell bidders whether apprentices use cloud, on-premise or mixed environments and what production access evidence can safely show. Ask how practical work is kept away from live services, how failed changes are discussed without blame, and how tool diversity is handled. The provider owns plan alignment; employer platform and security owners approve sandboxes, evidence and permissions.
A realistic evidence conversation
Illustrative, not a prescribed requirement: an apprentice replaces a manual release step with a controlled pipeline check. Their record explains the previous risk, design options, test environment, access controls, failure condition, rollback, monitoring and measured effect over several releases. Secrets and production identifiers are removed. Use this scenario to ask a prospective organisation how it explores automation value and maintenance cost, verifies individual contribution in shared configuration, and continues safely if the employer cannot grant platform access or a demonstration fails.
Handover checks
- Programme owner confirms the registered version and maps evidence across development and operations.
- Employer platform owner approves sandbox access, production boundaries and sanitised artefacts.
- Security owner checks that logs, configuration and demonstrations contain no credentials or unsafe access.
Questions to ask before buying
- How do you assess DevOps reasoning across different platforms without making one tool mandatory?
- What evidence can show release and incident learning when production artefacts cannot leave the employer?
- How will you manage the December 2026 transition and any practical-technology contingency?
Think it through.
Explain your decisions.
These are original learning prompts. They are not live assessment questions, an official mock paper or a prediction of your result.
1. A deployment passes automated checks but causes errors in production. What would you do next?
Explore a response structure
Explain how you would assess impact, use monitoring, decide whether to roll back and communicate with the responsible team. Then consider what the tests or environment missed. Separate immediate recovery from the later improvement work.
2. How would you decide whether to automate a task that takes 10 minutes each week?
Explore a response structure
Estimate frequency, error risk, development time, support cost and likely lifetime. Consider whether simpler process improvement would be enough. Explain how you would verify the automation and decide whether it continues to provide value.
3. What makes infrastructure as code safer than an undocumented manual change?
Explore a response structure
Discuss review, version history, consistency and recovery, while acknowledging risks from a mistaken template or excessive permissions. Explain the checks needed before applying a change and how you would handle state and sensitive configuration.
Questions about this standard
Is DevOps just a cloud certification?
No. Preparation should address the occupational role and applicable standard, including collaboration and operational responsibility. Vendor training can support technical development, but a certificate alone does not explain how the apprentice delivers and runs a service.
Which assessment methods apply?
Use the published assessment plan for the apprentice’s registered version and option. Methods, timings, gateway documents and grading rules can differ between versions. These original practice prompts are learning resources, not live assessment questions or a prediction of an assessment outcome.
Can we book with Avenor?
